Ok! I have been aware of this site for about 2 weeks now. I have read and read and read!! And loved every minute of it. I am currently taking Wilton Course 1 and have 1 class left of that. I am going to take the next 3 as well. I have made 4 cakes so far and the more I do the more I want to do. It is 5 am and I have been awake for 2 hours thinking about torting!!!! Do you always do it? Why? Aside from just the extra yummies? What filling is good for yellow cake mix? I have been such an insomniac lately!!!! Does it get any better? :< Although like I said before....I am totally loving it!!!! LOL Someone please help me recover a little sanity!!!!!!

Torting is a great way to add extra dimensions to the flavour of your cakes, as well as extra height! I can't think of a filling that wouldn't go with a yellow cake - it's a great all rounder. I filled a little 6in heart yellow cake this weekend with Grand Marnier & orange buttercream, and drizzled the cakes with neat Grand Marnier before I filled them - it was scrumdiddlyumptious!

It gets better and easier. Torting is really very easy and with yellow cake, I think raspberry is very good or strawberry. I buy the sleeves of filling from the cake decorating store here and they are really good. Plus, they are very convenient.

I have been decorating for about 2 years now and in the beginning it took me forever to decorate a cake. Now, I can do one pretty quickly.

Have fun with the classes!

It's not really that I'm having a hard time necessarily. I just can't think of anything else!!! LOL! My DH thinks I'm crazy because I can't sleep thinking of all the possibilities!! I baked 3 diff size and shapes of yellow cake last night before bed so I could practice/learn diff techniques today or tonight and I couldn't sleep more than 3 hours b/c I just feel sooo excited that I'm finally doing this!

I torted for the first time on sat and was surprised at how uncomplicated it was. I can definitely see the possibilities of different dimensions. Do you always do it though? And how long do you let it settle before icing? Do you crumb coat right away and then let it settle or crumb coat later?

Ok! I just realized I'm rambling.....LOL

I don't always torte. It depends on what the cake is for. I generally fill and let it settle, then crumb coat. To be honest, sometimes I just fill and crumb coat without letting it settle. I haven't had any problems either way.

Sure it gets better. You'll go from staying awake thinking about cakes... to dreaming about them!

I always torte anymore, since I prefer filling to enhance the flavor of the cake.

Eventually (try a year or two) you might be able to look at something without thinking of how to make it into a cake. For now, enjoy it! There are so many flavors to try, techniques, ideas... I've been limited to "one cake per month plus birthdays." Yeah, but we have birthdays every month almost, and April there are 4, so I get maybe 25-30 cakes/year in and it's barely enough. If you're hooked already, tell dh you'll see him in a couple of years!

Michelle104--I know what you mean! I have only been decorating for about a year, but I feel like I go to sleep thinking of cakes, dream about cakes, then wake up thinking about cakes! icon_lol.gif

And I'm sure my DH would love for me to talk about something other than cakes and CC! icon_rolleyes.gif But w/ only the two of us, I'm like Zmama--only a cake or two a month. His friends' wives would kind of like me to stop sending cakes and cookies their way, as their DHs are eating too much!

Michelle I'm sorry to say that no, it doesn't get better. You dream of cake ideas, you can't sleep when you have a wedding cake order. And you go into Home Depot and everything you see in the way of home improvement suddenly gives you an idea of how you could use that for gumpaste or chocolate designs. Welcome to my world!. icon_biggrin.gif

One word of caution: Don't neglect your husband in the romance department! Take care of his "needs," then head for the kitchen while he falls asleep with a grin on his face! You'll both be happy!

A note of interest: the other wives will be jealous about your baking since you're setting the bar higher (because a lot of wives don't/won't cook/bake much!). One wife commented to my husband, "It looks like you married a regular Martha Stewart." I didn't hear her say it, so I'm unsure of the tone/intent, but I just grinned when I heard about it!

It's an addiction and we just can't help ourselves!

Cheers!

I have to say honestly that my husband is almost, well maybe not almost, just because I'm sssooooo all consumed by it....but he is very excited about it as well. He so completely supportive and he actually is the one that finally talked me into, well he pretty much just told me to sign up for the classes. In class is where I found out about this site!!! That alone was worth the price of all the classes together!!! Last fri I was supposed to go out with my sister and I told my husband I really didn't want to go....I just wanted to stay home and bake. He told me he's been waiting his whole life to hear that!!!! I about fell out of my chair laughing!!!! So far no loss in the romance department!!!! Thanks for the support everyone!!!!!
