I've done a search about freezing royal icing, but I'm not finding exactly the answer I'm looking for. What I find posted is about viability of freezing cakes that have royal icing decorations.
I found royal icing works great to attach items to fondant. For me, it works better than edible glue, piping gel, or water. BUT I hate making it (don't know why ... I just do), and I always end up with way more than I need for the project at hand. Does anyone know if it can be frozen then thawed and used to 'glue' things? Does freezing alter it's 'plaster-like' stickability?
Was just pondering if I could re-use the extra if it's been frozen. Has anybody tried this?
How about choosing candy melts or chocolate instead, then you can just melt as much as you need?
You can, I've done it before. Just make sure you label it royal icing! I once forgot that it was royal icing and not buttercream and piped it on some cupcakes and it oozed everywhere once it thawed! This was the result:

(They're supposed to be the mushrooms from the game Mushroomer because I always thought they looked more like cupcakes than mushrooms.) Oops! ![]()
I have found that beating a really small batch of royal in a glass pyrex measuring cup works. 1 cup size for 1/4 batch, 2 cup size for a 1/2 batch. I use a hand held kitchenaid mixer (the old 2 beater kind, not stand mixer).
Extra Royal? Then I just tint and pipe out small flowers. I can always add them to cookies later. And dried, they last a LONG time.
Glue? I keep a disposable decorating bag in my frig with a few colors of melting chocolate. Each one with a small hole. I microwave briefly to melt and use. Then I push back the melted chocolate about an inch to fold over the point, and wrap the large end of the bag around until it is a small "ball". Rubber band it and pop back in frig.
