I typed this message so many different times - and kept losing it - that I forgot to add this last time that the "CONGRaTULaTIONS" was printed on a sugar sheet using symbols from the Periodic table of Elements. There is no "G" or "T" symbol by itself, so we just covered the extra letter with the next symbol which explains the hap hazard placement instead of straight line. The Tiger is the school mascot logo and was also printed on the Sugar Sheet.
I wish I had seen the cake that Carolinecakes posted over the weekend that she spotted on pinterest but it had "chemical formulas' of sorts on the sides and would have made a great addition.
It was a great learning experience and maybe I can put some of that "education" to use on this next cake without waiting another 4 or 5 years to attempt this again!
Thanks again for all the support and help!

Hey Genna
When I saw that cake I thought of you, I did not see it before.....but that's life. You did a fabulous job on your cake, I didn't even realize about the books until you mentioned it. Love the lettering on the cake and you nailed the toppers. Happy to be helpful, just paying it forward. I have learned sooo much on CC, and continue to learn new things (new to me anyway). Great people here, always sharing their knowledge.
The site is buggy sometimes, so now I copy my posts before I hit the submit button. I hate to retype. What I have found useful for me is after a cake project I make notes, what worked, what didn't, what I would do differently. Helps to remember for next time especially since I don't do a lot of cakes. Case in point, seems like I have forgotten how to use my tappits.... Hey maybe you could incorporate that "chemical formula" in the next cake.
Oh for your cakes to bake even, next time try using baking strips or my favorite, collar your pans with parchment paper. My cakes bake to a full 2" and no need to level.

Forgot to add, you can freeze the extra buttercream, thaw in fridge before use.
Shirt Collar - this is in a foreign language but the pics are good. Try google translate

Since you make your own fondant I would knead tylose powder into your fondant, let it set for a few hours before using. It will dry firm.
This link was a dud, only a pic.....

@ LIttleJewel - Thank you! I am definitely a novice and I would NEVER have made it had it not been for the help I got here!
@ Carolinecakes - the notebook is a great idea! Like I said, it has been over 5 years since I attempted my last decorated cake. My memory is the pits - so the notebook (assuming I could remember WHERE it was ) would be a great help! And you are right, you always find the perfect example AFTER the fact! LOL But, I was happy with what I had and so was she - which is the important thing!
I did copy the post at one point, but it wouldn't let me "paste" so it didn't matter. I had SO much trouble posting it was ridiculous. It has been years since I hung out here, but I don't remember having any website problems then. Guess they are having growing pains.
Any suggestions on what to use as a guide? I considered paper but decided it probably wouldn't be stiff enough. I guess it needs to be some type of light cardboard? My preference would be to "scale" the collar and things down so that it is more of a full coat (since A LONG COAT is the significant part of the transition to Dr.) but also to allow more room for the name on it, etc. I don't have it worked out in my head, but have to soon. I hope to bake and freeze tonight and make the fondant...... then probably decorate Wednesday or Thursday. Still no access to tylose powder so not sure what I will do on that.................
I just put the extra buttercream in the fridge since I knew I would need it this week. Then I still think I will have buttercream left which I can freeze. I have a LOT! lol
Can you find ready made gum paste? A 50/50 mix of fondant and gumpaste will work. There are substitutes for Tylose Powder but I'm not sure which.
Poster board/stock card/cereal box? Something firm but flexible.
I like to make a paper mock up of the design, helps me to visualize.
I'm working on my "First Communion" cake for Saturday. Doing my first BC ruffles, I like working with fondant, wish me luck.
I found a tutorial for a lab coat that could be helpful but I will post it in a new thread so when people do a search for lab/doctor's coat they can find it.
