Question About Covering Cake Boards

I've seen some cute ways to cover cake boards on here other than the foil I usually use. What do you use? Can you use wrapping paper? If so, will the icing make greasy spots all over it? I've seen the big grease spots on a cake box when it's touching icing. Would the icing do that to wrapping paper or is there a way to prevent it?

you can use any style of wrapping paper you want just cover it will clear contact paper . HTH icon_smile.gif

If you're able to find the foil type wrapping paper, it generally works fine without covering it. If not, I usually use cello wrap (ya know the stuff used on gift baskets?) to cover the paper.

I usually buy the decorated ones too, but you can't find the decorated boards for the 10x14 size at my Michaels. I'm making a Cars cake for my son's birthday this weekend, and I thought the wrapping paper would be adorable. Thanks for the ideas for the clear contact paper and the cello wrap. I'll have to go out this week and see which one I can find!

Hi everyone. There was another thread on here yesterday about covering your boards and what you should use, etc. I always thought that if you purchased the foil from a cake decorating store, it would be food safe. Matter of fact, one of the employees told me that it was. Well, now I find out that it is not FDA approved. I have several rolls and I'm trying to figure out what to cover the foil with in order to make sure it is safe. I've heard a lot about contact paper. But because I have become paranoid, I'm wondering if this is safe as well. Does anyone have any information that would confirm that the contact paper is safe for food? Thanks so much!!

I tried to cover my cake board in a thick wrapping paper that seemed to have a coating on it. Didn't work--grease spots. Had to transfer the cake to another board before presenting. I will definately try cello wrap or contact paper next time. Colorful paper is so much prettier than gold or silver wrap.

i have used a plastic table cloth before. You can see in my photos I used a black and white check one that went great with a race car themed cake. I like to use mirrors for cake boards too!

Good question about clear contact paper! Is it food safe? I see people using it, but never thought about that! Anyone out there know?

If you have time, you can always cover your board with a layer of fondant that is marbled to go with the color scheme of your cake. We did that in Wilton III class, and I think it has a neat effect... However, I always remember it too late to do that and let it dry some before putting the cake on it!!!

Ok...Here is a dumb question...What is contact paper? And where do you get that?
I just use the plain...white and silver wilton ones...or the drums if it is heavy...But would love to do something else!!

Con-tact- paper is sold in department stores where you find the shelf paper for your cabinets. The contact paper that we are talking about is Con-tact clear decorative covering.

I buy my contact paper at Hobby Lobby in the picture framing section. It's a matte finish and not shining. I cover scrap booking paper with it and wrapping paper would also work.
You can also put your cake on a cake board before placing it directly on the covered cake board if concerned about food safety. icon_smile.gif

there have been threads on here before about contact paper not being food safe. That being said, I've used it under my cakes and its always been fine. Granted if the cake is on their for days, it might not be good for it but my cakes are usually on there no more than 48 hours.

this is good idea I have done this but you can not put you cake directly on the fondant. Your cake will need to be on a cake board (I used waxed cake boards) then you can use royal icing or melted candy melts to stick board to the fondant. The covered fondant board will need to try for a few days.

If you put the cake directly on the board the cake will get soft and soak up the color from the fondant (if colored)

You can also to the say for the fani foils board just put you cake on cake board and secure to the cover board you will be fine. If you look in cake decorating books this is how they do it and it was also mention here a few time about the fondant board.

Alrighty, I have decided to contact the company who makes the Con-tact paper. Unfortunately, I cannot find an email address for this company which is Kittrich Corporation. So, I have written to them and posed the food safety question and I hope to hear back from them soon. I'll post when I do receive the information. At least this way, we will have the accurate information and with this, we can each make an educated decision as to whether we use the paper for this purpose.

Oh yea, forgot to mention that Wilton's fanci foil wrap is food safe and FDA approved. I went to their website and got this information.

There has been several concerns regarding Contact paper on this site. Some did put a message saying that they did contact the company and it is food safe. I have no idea where that was posted, but it has been no here since 2007!

ericablondegirl, I have seen on several messages with the word "bump". Does that just mean that they don't know? If so, why even add it to the discussion? Just curious and not trying to sound mean!!!!
