Hi, I'm new here, this is my first post. I'm going to make a stacked birthday cake for my son tomorrow, Do I really have to put dowel rods??
I'm also going to make the Barbie pan cake for my daughter, but I will make a bigger rectangular cake under it because the quantity from the pan comes out little. Do I also have to put rods?? What if I don't put anything? what could happen?? Thanks a lot for answering me.

Hi, jouj, and welcome to the most addicting thing since chocolate!
I am certainly no expert, but how big will your son's cake be?
I've done small-medium stacked cakes without dowelling with no problem.

I always dowel everything stacked, just like to be safe...

Hi,
It's probably best to dowel just to be on the safe side. I've done larger stacked and smaller stacked. Just for an example I thought I could get away from stacking a tiny 4" and 6" and by the time the cake was cut the 4" started to "sink" - that was my lesson learned on that one!!! Good luck with your cake. icon_smile.gif

if you mean it is just a flat character pan cake that will go on top of a rectangle sheet cake, I think you'll be fine.

Thanks for all your answers.
Kjt: I'll be doing 2 cakes, one is Character pan with a rectangle cake base under it. The second one will be a 12" round, then an 8" on top.

What are the dowels you usually use? are they the wooden or plastic ones? Are they with flat tops or just plain sticks??
I don't know why I have the feeling that if I put dowels, and then top cake, the dowels will go into the top cake!!
Thanks.
