It's a four tier cake, but tiers 2 & 3 are hallowed out, what's this technique called? And how is this cake not falling?

doesnt look like the center is cake. Rather it looks like a decorated cake pillar.
THe middle tier must have been made out of something else (I'd guess acrylic) and then decorated over. With something as ornate as that, I'd be willing to bet it was custom made. Pillars could work as well but I can't see where in that design they would be.
