i put gold leaf on swiss meringue buttercream -- i'm sure the cake was frozen when I iced it then i kept it refrigerated after that and it was ok -- there was a very slight color difference but oh well gold leaf is gold leaf

Moisture will affect it, so you should do a test run beforehand. Sometimes you'll take it out of the fridge and it will start separating in places where the cake forms condensation.
