Does anyone know with the new heightened security regulations if you can bring a cake on a plane? I know they restrict liquids but couldn't remember if food items were restricted. I am going to Atlanta in less than two weeks to celebrate my sister's 30th birthday and I want to bring a small 8" cake along with me. I've never traveled with cake so I'm not sure if this is even worth the hassle but there won't be time once I'm there to make one so I'd love to be able to bring one. For anyone who has traveled with a cake on a plane, how does it go through security? If you put it on the conveyor, that sounds like disaster to me.

Any input is greatly appreciated! My sister has never tried one of my cakes so I'd love to be able to make one for her big day.

I sent a 8" and a 5" stacked cake with dowels this last year. The box was also propped up with several longer dowels. I put it inside a hatbox with a picture of it on the front. It has to be able to fit through the xray machine.
One of the gals from OSSAS this past October brought her competition cake on the plane and she said they put it through the xray machine. HTH!

The best thing you can do is phone up the airline your flying with and ask. You dont want to make a cake, get to the airport and have to let the staff eat it instead. If i was you ring up twice and see if you get the answer, and remember to take their names. Good luck i hope you can take the cake for your sister with.

Thanks! I am really excited about bringing a cake with me. I will call the airline to be sure, though. I appreciate the feedback!

Thanks! I forgot about the 2 carry ons . . . I may have to stick my purse in my bag so I can carry the bag on and the cake on. I have one of those Wilton round cake savers with the three latches on it and I was thinking about putting the cake in it. I sure hope this works and I don't end up with a smashed cake once we land!

I would be remiss if I failed to remind you of the last time somebody took cakes on a plane...

It did not end well. icon_wink.gif

A couple of months ago they announced on CNN that they were allowing liquids and gels on planes now. Did they reinstate the ban, or never drop it at all?

TOO FUNNY, Piece of cake!!! Thanks for my morning laugh!

Tmriga, they did loosen the ban on gels / liquids but you are still restricted to what you can fit inside a quart sized baggie and you're restricted to (I think) 3 oz. containers. I knew about the liquid / gel restriction but wasn't sure about food in general, and as silly as it sounds, buttercream is almost gel-consistency so I didn't know if I'd get to the gate and be scraping buttercream off of my cake!

Yes, I can understand your concern. If the inspectors where you live are anything like the ones in my area, I am sure that they would mistake fondant icing for plastique, and oh, my gosh, if you put the candles on the cake before you left the house, we would be collecting amongst us for bail money right now! LOL!

Theresa,

I didn't think about THAT . . . would you all really bail me out? So right under the "Donating to Cake Central" tab could be the "Get Carol out of Jail" tab. LOL!

I took cake on the plane when I went to Reno in October. I took a 8 inch sour cream cake. I was told it had to be in some type on container or zip lock bag.

On the way home my sister baked peach cobbler for me to bring to my son. She put it in a plastic ice cream container and put that in a zip lock, I had no problem on the return trip.

So if I have that Wilton cake saver thing (the plastic round cake container with a handle and latches) I should be okay, right? It is see through.

I think you will be ok with that container.
