For those that use acrylic discs for applying buttercream, do you prefer discs .25" bigger than the cake or .50" bigger than the cake?

I don't necessarily want the extra thick icing that would come with the .50" bigger discs. I'm wondering if there is an advantage to having an extra thick layer of icing or a drawback to having a thinner layer during the icing process. I'm really just wanting to get the best looking end product with the fewest problems along the way.
