Hi

i can't seem to figure out how to upload a picture

i saw a cake I love the look of and I was wondering if anyone knew how the middle layer was done 

I thought it might be stencil but I'm not sure

any help would be appreciated will try to copy pic here

Thats definately black fondant with stenciled gold luster dust.

I believe you are asking about the pattern on the middle layer.  I was almost positive it was a Martha Stewart paper punch.  It took some searching but I found it.  It is the Martha Stewart Caning Pattern paper punch.

I believe it is wafer paper punched with a craft punch, over gold fondant or modeling chocolate.

It looks like gold leaf on the tier with the pattern.
