Hello to all! This is my first post, but I've been "skulking" for a few months. There are so many experienced decorators that I know someone can give me some help. Here's the deal:
I've been asked to do a Dr. Seuss-themed cake for 240 school children (in March). I've looked in the gallery and I love so many of them - especially the topsy-turvy. But I don't know that that is practical.
There are some special circumstances:
1. We are stationed in Germany, so that means a small oven (16x14)
2. It also means very limited freezer space (so no pre-baking and freezing lots and lots of cake)
3. I've never covered a cake in fondant. Am willing to try it, but I also want the kids to like it. Maybe MMF? OR Sugarveil?
Here is my current thought - A centerpiece and cupcakes. Maybe some books and a hat with cupcakes to make up the difference. But, then there's the fondant question. So, any thoughts, advice, hints, suggestions, or ideas are greatly appreciated! ![]()
I am glad you came out of hiding!
Welcome to CC!!
I love the topsy turvy look for Dr. Seuss but I am scared of them ![]()
What about choc. transfers of different characters from the books. You could do them ahead of time so the days of cake baking and icing making are easier.
You should make some MMF and experiment with it...make sure its what ya wanna use....I think you could make some fun Dr Seuss accents for the tops of the cupcakes...green eggs and ham, the cat, his hat, etc. MMF can be soooo colorful! AND mmf does not need refrigeration or freezing so storing it shouldnt be too much of a problem! ![]()
I am doing a sheet cake, I have to make 4 quater sheet cake and glue them together with BC which I understand you can't do, I am not sure how to do a transfer. So the CCC would work. I am tracing a picture of the cat in the hat on a piece of wax paper and I lay the wax paper on top of crusting BC and poke wholes in the paper with a tooth pick, I then have the pattern on the cake and then trace it with frosting, fill in and you have the cat in the hat. I am going to write Happy Birthday Dr. Suess around it. HTH
I use candymelts for the transfers. They aren't bad tasting- I kindof like them

Sounds like a great idea =) Good luck!

I just measured the inside of my pan and it is 11.5 in by 15.5 inches. From outside to outside it is 12 inches by 16 inches. Good luck.
The other day we had a post of race car cupckes with a top cake maybe 6-8 inches. I think it would be cute to make small cake stacked to make suess hat iced red and white striped sitting atop of cupcake tower with faces of suess characters on top of cupcakes Maybe green eggs on top of some. ![]()
