I am attempting to make my first pillow cake, and I was wondering....what exactly is fondant glue? I've seen others mention it as something they use to put the cording, ect on the pillow edges. I did see someone mention meringue powder and water mixed together...is that it? and if so, what are the ratios? Thanks in advance!

I just use vodka but then again I dont use alot of fondant. I know if you have gumpaste you can use a small amount like gumball size and let it disolve in a tablespoon of water that it works like glue....

I have never made a fondant covered cake, but I have been making fondant figures. I use piping gel as glue. I works great and is easy ( I just bought a small tub at Wal-Mart.

use piping gel for fondant glue. The gumpaste glue is only suitable for gumpaste pieces. Fondant is edible as is piping gel and you can stick the world with that stuff! icon_smile.gif

a pinch of tylose/gumex in 15ml water works great. I use a nail polish bottle (unused) to keep my glue in. The brush works wondefull!

Thanks everyone! Unfortunately I don't have and piping gel here icon_cry.gif So, I'll have to wait till I can get out tomorrow (sick 7-yr-old right now, not going anywhere!) I don't have any tylose/gumex either. Psurrette- I use lemon extract alot of times to attach things, but this time, I'm afraid the rope-like cording will be too heavy and it will fall off!
Thanks again!

You can easily make it out of fondant or gum paste. I use gumpaste. Just take little bits of fondant or gum paste and stick them in a jar (really just little tiny pieces) and add enough water to cover them. Let it set for at least an hour and you will have a nice glue. This is what Wilton will be teaching in their new Fondant and Gum Paste Course, but I learned this from one of Lindy Smith's books. Works like a charm and is a bit stronger than using vanilla, lemon extract or vodka. Especially works great if you are gluing dried pieces of fondant or gum paste together for a figure or model. My x-wing fighter in my photos was made in pieces and put together with gum glue--the extracts or clear alcohols would have never been strong enough.

Hey missyek- Thanks for your help on this one. I actually got impatient and didn't want to wait for piping gel and mixed together enough gumpaste mix and water to make a thin sort of paste and it worked out pretty well. I think the gumpaste glue is what I'll use from now on! Thanks again for all of the help-your tutorial rocks! thumbs_up.gif

You can also mix equals amounts of fondant and water and have a very thin fondant mixture and use that. It works great.
