Has anyone ever used colored pencils to decorate on the side of fondant. I've been playing around with "drawing" on the some left over fondant and really love the effect. I went online and put in "Non toxic pencils" and crayola has some pencils that state that they are non toxic. I just don't know though. I would never ever use anything with lead in it of course but not sure if it would be safe to use the non toxic ones either. I'm sure when they created these it wasn't for food use. Does anyone know of any "food pencils"? I have all the food coloring paints and the Gourmet Writer markers by AmeriColor (really terrific item!) I know this is kind of an obscure question but I thought what the heck. There is such a wealth of knowledge fromt the people on this site! ![]()
If the package says non-toxic they should be fine, especially if they are made for kids. It's not like you are going to cover the cake with colored pencil markings.
However, writing/drawing on freshly covered cakes with anything that takes pressure will damage your fondant and most likely will not have the results you want.
You could make panels with fondant, let them dry, do your art work and then attach them to the cake. This might be a good way to use this technique. Use a cake dummy to shape the panels for any thing that doesn't have a flat side (rounds, ovals, etc.).
I hope you can do this. I would really like to see some photos of it.
Best of luck to you.
Michele
Play-Dough is labelled non-toxic. Would you eat that?
Yes, I know that folks use chalks on gumpaste. But gumpaste doesn't get eaten like icing does.
Remember that cakes and their icing are food to most people, and most people would not want to eat pencil drawings.
Thanks for the replies from both of you. The practice drawings I did were on panels, (not shaped though, in fact they were pretty random and rough but I thought it was ok to practice on - nice and dried out too) so that is a great idea to shape them to the cake. Then they could be removed before eating as well, than no one would be eating pencil markings.
Thanks a bunch. I will post some pics of them soon.
There was a thread on this, I'll try to locate it - Found it! http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-56573-.html
You want a PMA certified non-toxic pencil - there's a link http://www.ontimesupplies.com/Colored_and_Drawing_Pencils_Art_Drawing_and_Drafting_Instruments_subsection_719_page_1.html
Located this on the standards for certification -
