You guys were right...this site is addictive!!!!
My daughter and I were at our local cake and cupcake shop yesterday to look for a birthday cake. My daughter is turning 4 in March and she desperately wants a "beautiful" princess cake. The woman who owns and makes these cakes is amazing - her cakes are just gorgeous and delicious (I'd love to shadow her while she makes her cakes - do people even do that??).
Anyway, we looked through some photos and my daughter fell in love with this one particular cake. See link below.....

My question is.....how difficult do you think it will be to make the tiara and the banner stay stiff and upright? I would imagine they are made of fondant. Since I'm very new at this, will fondant get hard and rigid enough to stay firm like that so that the tiara will stay upright?

I'm by no means a professional, but if I were doing this cake, I would do the banner and crown out of gumpaste as they dry up harder than fondant. I've heard, though, that you can mix gumpaste with fondant and get close to the same effect.....I've never tried that though. Hope that helps and good luck with your cake!
I don't know about fondant/gumpaste but if you wanted to make the crown and sign non-edible you could use the fun foam sheets that are sold in the craft store and paint the crown gold as I don't believe it is sold in that color. The rest of the cake could be all edible. Hope this helps you out as an alternative.
Use gumpaste and you won't have any problems. You could probably do the banner in fondant and be ok, but I would use gumpaste for the crown.
