I am making my first ever 3 D cake , my son wanted a football cake for his 15th birthday and I was planning on making a sheet cake with green(grass) frosting, and placing the football on the grass, but my question is, do I have to treat the football like a tier, using dowels to hold it up? I also need a recipe that will hold up well, I am going to use the wilton football cake pan and make two to make it 3D. I am really worried because I have never done a cake like this before, The only reason I am attempting it is because it is for my son icon_smile.gif. Any one that has done this please help!! I am so new at this LOL

Any good recipes out there?

Darlene

I've made a 3D football with the Wilton pan. Here's the pic http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&meta=allby&uname=DianeLM&cat=0&pos=14.

It won't be perfectly rounded because the football pan is not exactly half a football.

You will definitely need a sturdy cake mix for this. The football in the picture is a chocolate pound cake made with a mix and a box of instant pudding. I've also done this with the White Almond Sour Cream recipe to which I've added one yolk per recipe.

In my picture, the football cakes are actually on their sides. I'm guessing you'll probably lay the cakes flat. They are HEAVY!! You will definitely need a board and dowels for support.

Good luck! I'm sure it will be awesome!

Thanks for the nice compliments!

I used the choco pound cake recipe from the Cake Mix Dr.

1 box devil's food mix
1 3.9 oz. pkg. instant pudding mix
4 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup oil

I did a cake almost identical to that (in my pics), except, I only used one half of the football. I didn't use any dowels or support. I just laid the half of the football on the sheet cake. The sheet cake was white cake mix from a box, and the football was chocolate cake from a box.

I have also done a 3D football. I used the football pan and made 2 cakes. iced the middle and put them together. Froze the cake for about an hour or so and started carving the edges trying to make it rounder. I only used regular cake mix plus I added strawberry jello powder, worked just fine. The cake is in my pictures.

I used chocolate bc. The recipe I use is virtually identical to the one on the back of the Hershey's cocoa can. It's all butter, yet it still crusts.

I made a football cake once. I also used a choc. buttercake because it is more dense for the football. I made the football look like it was diving right into the square cake which was covered with green grass (buttercream) The supports that I used to hold the football at an angle are believe it or not leftover cake that I carved into supports to hold the football up. I then covered the cake that was supporting it with buttercream grass so it really looked like it was diving into the grass. I used the wilton football pan and dowled two of them together.
