How To Make A Fire Hose Cake

Hi, 

I saw here a picture of a fire hose cake and a firefighter helmet on it. Does anybody know how to make the first layer look like the fire hose?

Next to the picture it said that there is a DDpie blog that explains how to make it, but when I tried to enter it it said that it's only open for invites.

I can't find a tutorial anywhere. I need your help.

Have you checked Pinterest?  There are several cakes like that there.  They are just wrapping fondant around the bottom tier.  Some have textured the fondant.  I hope the pics will be of some help.
