I was told that red frosting has a "taste" to it that is not pleasing. I have 2 red cakes that need to be done soon. Can you tell me what kind of coloring or frosting you use that you think tastes best. Thanks!

I recently tested Americolor Super Red. It was much better than Wilton. I used much less product and got a really good red color. I am going to be ordering a LOT of Americolor colors TODAY!

Americolor is stronger than Wilton, but you're going to use quite a bit of either to get a true red. If you only have access to Wilton (it's that way in our area, and sometimes there's not enough time to get it shipped in time!) then go with the No-Taste Red. It may still have a slight taste in high concentrations. I've heard that airbrush colors work well if you're doing a large section of uniform color, but haven't tried it out myself yet!

I have had a lot of luck with Country Kitchen's red liquid/gel red color. You don't have to use a lot, and it does not have any taste. Good luck.

I just read on the Wilton forum that someone uses a teaspoon of red koolaid mixed with her liquid and blended into the frosting. she said no one has noticed a taste. i think it was in the general info forum

I made an Elmo cake for my son's second birthday this summer, so I made a lot of red frosting. I tried the Wilton "No Taste" color, and it really didn't have a taste. I was pleased with it.

I am making an Elmo cake, used the Wilton Red no taste, I used just about the whole bottle of paste. It still looks pink, I made it last night, should I add more red color, just let it sit longer, stir it up some? Please help!!!!

I wouldn't use the koolaid...someone tried on another site and said the taste was horrible!!

Libby...just add more color...sometimes it takes a bottle or so.

Personally, I wouldn't try colored sugar. It might make your frosting grainy. I'd just add more red paste. It does take a lot. I used almost a full bottle just to make an Elmo image on the top of my cake. I don't think letting it sit longer will strengthen the color.

I found the same thing when I made black icing. It looked purplish gray. But once I added a lot more paste, it turned out fine.

My instructor told us to make pink first and then add the red - that way you dont use so much color. I tried it and used the wilton "barbie Pink" first and got a dark pink then added Red Red and it worked great.
