About to make a quilting pattern for the first time EVER. What is the easiest most fool proof way to do it?   What product should I buy?

Good timing Jessica, I watched a great video on You Tube by Crazy Kool Cakes. Her technique is great and the only tool you need is a triangular ruler. Give her a try.
