katy625 - it is a character from the movie cars.

Do you want to make him flat on the cake, then you can make a FBT or do you want a 3d effect for the cake.

Tow Mater is an animated charactor from the movie Cars. If I were doing this cake I would do a buttercream transfer onto the top of the sheet cake then add background using trees and highway whatever you can imagine.

How big would you want Mater to be? Most fondant decorations are relatively small, fondant is heavy, particularly sitting on top of a cake. How many are you looking to serve? If your sheetcake is sufficient, then a small Mater out of fondant would work as a decoration. If you need more cake, then a big cake Mater (he could be covered in fondant) could sit on top of the sheet, but he would probably need a board & dowels underneath.

Have you searched the galleries for ideas?

katy625, Mater is the towtruck from the movie "Cars." Were you kidding? icon_smile.gif

I can't speak for katy625, but as a person with no children, there are plenty of kid movie references here that escape me!

Glad there are others who understand the "lingo" and can help.

How big you want Mater to be is what would sway me in one direction or the other. If you want him to be fairly large, I'd probably do cake. On the other hand, if you want him to be 'toy' sized, I would probably do fondant.

Thank you all for your ideas. What I am looking to do is make a half sheet and then I was going to do a 3-D of Mater on top of the cake. Not real big but the size of a small toy. So maybe I should do it in fondant? Or I could make a smal 3-d mater out of cake and then decorate it with fondat or just frost it and then color it.

I think that it would be really cute if you went with the cake option. That way, the birthday boy could get his own persoal cake , so to speak. I myself, would probably do the mater cake in fondant also as opposed to just BC. Whatever you decide-Have Fun!!!
