Cake Decorations....what Is It?

Hi.  I have a friend that wants me to make her wedding cake.  She sent me this picture.  I can't tell what the design is made of.  If its fondant, do you have an idea as to what to use instead?  She doesn't want fondant.

you could do that in buttercream with a real ribbon trim and then pipe the scrolls -- easy peasy

That cake is butter cream iced with the dark icing design piped on.  I did that design years ago in fondant with black royal icing.

It is very easy to do.  Practice the design on a cake pan, until you feel comfortable piping it on the cake.  I did the tiers separately and then put it together at the venue.
