I ordered the gem mold with 65 cavities from firstimpressionsmolds.com. I tried to make the gems using regular sugar, what a nightmare! I emailed them and they quickly told me that I needed to use Isomalt. It's like a sugar substitute. And gave me a description on how to make it including a photo of the finished product. Apparently the isomalt is easier to work with.
If it were only so! I knew about Isomalt up front, and that's what I used. Nightmare! Nightmare, I tell you! UGH!
I ordered 4 bags of the gems from Jewels Of Denial and was very dissapointed. They just look like peices of hard candy with no real cut of jewels. The picture on the website made them look much better than the really are so I guess I will have to search some more. Wish me luck
There is a post in General section called Jewels of denial quality where they talk about this. They also have a link to Jeff the chef's site. He sells jewels made of isomalt. They are gorgeous and can even be lustre dusted different colors. They are 1" by 1/2" ovals and 1/2" circles. Beautiful - but too large for my current cake design. Maybe in the future though!

I have since, not had the time to search for a place that sells the isomalt and so I do not have any photos to share.
BUT I have made gemstones from fondant and then painted them in the CC . I even got the wedding ring to look like a real ring with using royal to make the prongs that holds the gem in place. Very cool.
I will post a photo tomorrow of my completed cake.
Could you share with us the recipe and directions for making these little beauties? I was going to try it with a hard candy mix but the Isomalt sounds more logical -- how would I do that?
Bob, I am so sorry I missed this reply! Firstimpressionsmolds.com sent me the instructions and I cannot find them. But they basically said to use the isomlat instead of sugar. They also said that a customer also tried them and she baked the mold after pouring the isomalt in, in order to get rid of the bubbles. That seemed to work well for her. If you check my gallery, you will see how I used the gem mold to get that diamond shape on the engagement ring I did. I used fondant. After painting it a bit, the facets faded a bit, but were still noticeable.
