I got it at a bakery for only $2 and it came with the clips. And would i need to use 2 boxes of mix? Thanks for any help! I am still a beginner but learning quick with alot of thanks to this site!

Oooh, great deal. But I think you really need the core. If you have the Wonder Mold (doll pan) check to see if that'll fit. It really does make a difference in how these big molds bake up.

Yes, you need the core so it bakes well in the inside. Otherwise, you are going to end up with an uncooked center and burnt outside...

The heating core that comes with this bear is rather large, so you would need something similar to its size...

I believe Michael's or other cake stores sell the heating core seperately!!

Yes Michaels does sell the heating core separately and even with that purchase you are still coming out ahead of the game. Don't you love a good deal!
I have made one of these cakes with no problems, but I know there are a few threads on this subject about disasters. You might want to check them out and learn from our mistakes. Real big issue--cooling it like the instructions state. DO IT!

I too picked up the stand-up bear pan without the heating core. I got mine at a garage sale. I purchased the baking core at Michales and it doesn't have a big enough lip on the outside of it so it can sink into the middle of the cake. I have used my pan with this same baking core several times without a problem. I loaned it to my aunt to use and her heating core sunk and she destroyed her cake trying to get it out.
Here's what I suggest-
You can use paperclips to keep the core in place or you can try it without. If it happens to sink into the middle, just leave it in there and warn the person cutting the cake. Don't try to dig it out unless this is a cake for a customer, in which case, you could try to retreive your baking core, but you might lose your whole cake.

Please let me know if you find someplace that sells the heating core for this particuliar pan.

Found them at http://www.countrykitchensa.com/catalog/mini.aspx?T=1&SubCatId=982

2/3 way down the page. Only 2.99 - a bargain! However, since Wilton has discontinued them, they may have few or none.

Good luck!

Welcome to CC.
Sorry I can't help on the heating core issue, though you could try the heating core from wilton and try clamping it on with binder clips. The heating core that comes with it is pretty large and goes pretty deep.

I just made the stand up bear Sunday and it takes 6 cups of batter in the cavity (and 2/3 cup in the core) and, they recommend you use a pound cake and regular cake recipe mixed. Mine came out pretty well, though 1 ear cracked (fixable) and it was a bugger getting the heating core out since it clamps to one side of the pan.

Good luck thumbs_up.gif

The stand-up bear was my first cake. It was for my son's first birthday and he's 20 yrs. old now. When I made the cake, I had never had a class or anything. It turned out wonderful. I do suggest that you follow the instructions for baking and cooling. I would not bake it without the core.

I wonder if you can make a "core" with heavy duty aluminum? or extend the lip around the core so it doesn't sink in?

Just make sure you grease that baby well so that it does come out...

Let me know if this work!

PS: if Wilton has discontinuted them...better stock up on them...

C'ya..going shopping!..ahhahahaha

Thanks for all the help everyone, I think that I will go to michaels or ac moore and see if they have it this week. I live a hour away from most of the craft stores but I think that I will be that way this week. And thank you also for the welcome...it is my first post although I have been coming to this site for a couple of months now. I have been teaching myself to do most of the decorating cause the classes are so far away. Everyone here has been a big help....thanks again....I will let you know if I find it!

I finally finished it today. I never did find a baking core...but i called the lady that i bought the pan from and she said that she never used it....so i thought...what the heck ill give it a try! Well, I baked it at a lower temp for a longer time...actually it ended up being 4 hrs, and it turned out great! I had a problem with the pan leaking and it ended up leaking out alittle over 1/4 of the batter, I added more about 2/12 - 3 hrs of baking...it still turned out great....ill add a pic...let me know what you think, and thanks again for all of your help!
