Hello!
I am fairly new to doing tiered cakes, and I have only done 2-tiers cakes so far. Are you supposed to use a cake board between tiers for a 2-tier cake if the tiers are stacked one directly on top of the other (instead of being separated by columns or something)? I have never done anything more than put dowels in, and I have not had problems so far, but I have only done a handful of tiered cakes.

Thanks!

For proper tiered cake construction you need to use cake boards covered with something like glad press and seal, clear contact paper, waxed cake boards, etc so it doesn't get greasy from the icing (this will cause it to weaken and buckle) and dowels cut to the height of the cake.

Just doweling won't protect your creation because the top cake could sink right down onto the dowels and all your hard work goes down the tubes! icon_eek.gif

It is amazing how heavy a tiered cake can get!
