Ok I just posted pics of a cake I did this weekend. I was pretty happy with it except.. its to tall. This is a problem I am continuing to have. I bake in 2" pans and level to that height. I put a buttercream dam around it for filling, and I end up with a cake that is 5 inches tall! What am I doing wrong ![]()
First off I think your cakes are GREAT, and you could try using less batter in your pans. Hopefully someone else has a better solution![]()
I am stacking 2 cakes each 2" tall. Is this not right?
It doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong. Two 2" cakes, a 1/2" filling, the board, and 1/4 -1/2" of icing all around, comes to almost 5". My cakes are usually about 4 1/2" tall. I don't see a problem. Did you want a smaller cake? Seems like your doing everything right. ![]()
I don't know what you're doing, except maybe using A LOT of filling, but I wouldn't worry about it at all. Most usually end up 4 1/2 inches iced & filled.
I'd be thrilled to have them 5" finished. I like taller cakes. I especially like doing 3 2" layers.

OK I like the looks of them but how do you cut and serve them? Is it a piece of cake 1 1/2 x 2 x5 tall?
