Alright, I'm DYING to know how Confetti Cakes does that floral pattern!!! Also, I'd love to know how she piped that the pearlescent flowers like they do on the peony cake. I'd love to know how she makes the chocolate look so fluid??? Anyone have some insight? I'm trying to make a cake that is going to be seen by a bunch of mukety mucks....and I'd like to do something similar, obviously, I won't be able to recreate it completely. But I'd love to at least know. Anyone?

I think she might be referring to this website...

Thanks MrsMissey, I forgot to add that minor detail! You have it right, and I was looking at the wedding cakes and it's been driving me crazy trying to figure it out.

Looks like to me she might have mixed pearl dust into the frosting?

maybe you could call her or use the contact form to ask her??

I don't know how willing she would be to share that information though.

I got my inspiration for the wedding cake below from a Confetti Cakes cake. My piping didn't look nearly as good, but I thought the shimmer on the flowers turned out well. I did them in royal and them painted them with violet pearl dust (mixed with lemon extract).

It looks like she uses brush embroidery techniques to create some of the flowers on her cakes (like the peony cake).
I've never tried that technique, but I know there are lots of books that explain how to do it.

Here's a close up of the flowers. You can't see them very well in the other photo.

Holly, I LOVE your cake. It's beautiful! Did you pipe the flowers right on to the cake? How did you get the design of the flower to your cake? How did you get is so fluid looking? I'd love to be able to even come close to that.

Thanks Traci! I appreciate the compliment.

Here's a link to the specific cake that inspired my design: http://www.confetticakes.com/press59.html

I used Colette Peters' royal icing recipe and it was a perfect consistency for the piping.

I piped the flowers directly on the cake. I used tip 4 (I think!) to make the flower petals. I would make a blob then reduce the pressure as I pulled down to make an upside-down teardrop shape for each petal. It was all very free-form and random. I just put the flowers wherever I felt like it, then connected them here and there with vines. Some of the flowers have petals all the way around, and some are just two petals side by side. On others I made two petals, then piped a third on top. Sorry if this doesn't make sense--it's hard to describe! There are single petals here and there, too. I used tip 2 for the vines. I did them in white because I didn't want any green on the cake. I piped groupings of dots for flower centers also using tip 2. On the flowers/blossoms with fewer petals, I piped one or two dots just above the petals. I just kind of made it up as I went along, using the Confetti Cakes design as a general guide.

The flowers are painted with violet pearl dust and the vines are painted with regular pearl dust.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

It looks to me like a "thick" version of brush embroidery....here are the basic intructions from Wilton:

It also looks like pearl dust was dusted over them. I would email the website....I'm sure they will be nice enough to answer....after all...they are cake decorators!

Thank you Holly for that! It makes total sense now. thumbs_up.gif Do you think this would work over crusting buttercream? Probably not in royal though, right?
