I will be making my 1st wedding cake for someone outside of my family and she has asked for a cake tasting. She is requesting a 3 tier cake with 3 seperate flavors and fillings. If you have done a cake tasting before - how did you do it? Do you take a slice? Do you take a small cake? I am just so confused icon_confused.gif

She is also trying to save money on her cake and I was wondering if I should bring along a sample of a plain white cake with a standard filling. I have already explained that the more tiers and the more flavors the higher the price.

I use inverted cupcakes, decorated with stars. For my portable tastings, I cut out layers with biscuit cutter and stack/decorate them. (See my gallery--there's a portable tasting pic in there.)

I put a little toothpick flag label on each of the cakes, with the flavor combo and icing on it, and all she had to do was save the little flags of her choice. That way she didn't have to write anything down or remember too much!

Some decorators make tiny individual cakes, and decorate them. Some take individual slices of plain cake, with side containers of frosting/filling so that the bride can mix & match to her tastes.

One thing--you may want to leave the area for about 7-9 minutes while they're tasting. This gives them some "let down" time together, so that they can really express their personal opinions on the taste, texture and appearance of the cakes. That's sometimes hard to do with someone strange watching you eat! icon_smile.gif

By all means--take the white cake, too. You'd be surprised at the people who still love it!
