so you had a basic recipe that you added flavorings to and your wife was a scratch baker. (did I read that right)
We had two cake recipes that were bases for ten different cake flavors. My wife did all the recipe R&D and baking, I just find it's easier to use "we" as a convention instead of explaining the division of labor every time I post.
Most of the differentiation was in the combinations of cake with frosting flavors, which also followed the same formula (a few frosting bases that could be easily modified to create a variety of flavors).
