How long after putting wafer paper on the side of a cake does it take to soften and "melt into the frosting"? This is my first time using it and I'm not sure what to expect. Right now it still feels stiff and has been on for about an hour. Also I did put a small amount of crisco on the back before putting it on the cake. Thanks

The small amount of shortening you used to attach the wafer paper is acting like a barrier - protecting the wafer paper from the water of the frosting. Next time, experiment with a finger wipe of water as glue.

The more water in the frosting recipe, the softer the wafer paper will become.

If it's been an hour, you may need more water. But not too much - or the wafer paper will be a gooey sticky mess.

Do you have an airbrush? You can airbrush with water. A spray mister may work, but will be harder to control.

Whatever you use, it will take a moment for the wafer paper to absorb the water.
