Once in a while I see where someone paints luster dust on royal icing. How is that possible....when royal melts with water? Wouldn't it also melt when the alcohol touches it? Or does the alcohol evaporate fast enough that it doesn't hurt the design? ![]()
I use luster dust on my cookies iced with royal and I have had no problems. It works really well. I use a mixture of luster dust and lemon extract.

You only use a tiny amount of liquid mixed with dust so it's not really enough to melt the icing.
The flowers in the Lavendar and Pearl wedding cake in my photos were royal icing painted with luster dust. I used lemon extract to make the "paint." I was just careful not to get the brush dripping wet. The liquid evaporated from the flowers really quickly. I had no problems with the flowers getting soft. I even painted some of them within a half hour of piping because I was in such a hurry!
Can I ask a question.......What is luster dust? I'm to decorating and love reading about things and am just wondering what luster dust is. Is it the same as shimmer dust?
