AWow!!! They look awesome!!! Do these face guards come in different sizes? How did you know it would fit the helmet? This is my main concern. I plan on using 8 inch rounds and stacking and sculpting from there- is that the size you used?
Thank you fit helping me out.
I use a 3 - 10"s and a 6". I also save my cake tops for the back to make it rounder. The face mask I buy only comes in one size. They're cheap too..but super heavy. Not sure if there are other sizes. After I do the basic carving...I hold that mask to the front of the cake a hundred times to make sure everything is right...then you have to carve more to allow for the buttercream and fondant thickness. That's why I don't want to fool with a gumpaste facemask.

I just want to make sure- do you use three 10 inch cakes with the 6 inch in top and then carve to get the round shape in top?
Debbie-I hate to bother you again about the cake, but I'm about to start working on details and have a few questions:
1. i see that you carved the bottom of the 10 inch rounds- looks to be about an 8 inch round now. What size cake base did you use? I am looking to get a 16 inch round (foamcoare) as i am putting a happy birthday plaque on the "field"
2. Roughly how much fondant do you think you used for the actual helmet? (not the stripes/team emblem/inside face area)? I am doing a Chicago Bears cake and have gotten one 2 lb. tub of navy Fondant from Chocopan- wondering if I would need to order another (I'm using the same cake dimenstions as you).
Thanks you do much for your help. I went to order the facemask and it was sold out! I found another that is similar in size- keep your fingers crossed :)
mbranko....I did carve in around the base. Not sure it it was as small as a 8" though. ...though a smaller base cake would've made for less carving. I can only recommend you print up a bunch of different angles...front shot...back shot, side and just start taking off a little at a time. Keep your cake tops as you may need them for the back. It actually comes together quicker than you think.
I'm not sure how much fondant....the front piece behind the face mask was black fondant so that part was cut out from the main color. Just remember to cover it COLD. It's so much easier to work with. Use cake boards...especially under the top of the cake because of the overhang.
I don't think I answered any of your questions. I can hardly wait to see yours and hear of your progress. Keep us posted with pictures along the way.
I am so happy I found this thread. I never thought about buying a face guard. I had a good fight with a face guard this weekend, I won In the end but it was touch and go there for a minute...lol.
AI couldn't find the exact face mask you mentioned either, but I got a similar one on Amazon for $13.59. Schutt Sports Youth EGOP-YF Super Pro Carbon Steel Football Faceguard . I used 3-10" layers and baked the top one in the bowl of my Kitchen Aide! It worked perfectly and was just the right size. I did have to bake it longer--don't know how much--just kept checking.
