I was just asked to make a cake for a friend with a roaring 20's theme. I found this cake idea, (I didn't make this cake, I found it online). My question is: Should the "threads" be royal icing? Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to create this look? I'm new to this site and appreciate all the knowledge and experience!

Thanks Leah_s! Do you think I could create the look with icing or would it be too delicate? I've used the grass tip to cover a cookie monster and teddy bears but never did anything vertically.
IMO, I think it would be waaay to delicate. But, me being the experimenter, would try it and have the fringe as a backup. Let us know how it works out!

I want to thank everyone for their help. I didn't have time to experiment, so I bought fabric fringe. I only needed a 2 layer cake, as opposed to the larger one in the photo I had chosen, so one row of fringe worked great. Thanks again!
