I'm making a fondant rope and tassle for grad. cake. the rope keeps cracking and breaking. should I have used gumpaste?

Gumpaste would work a lot better.  Usually the problem with fondant is stretching though, not cracking.  Maybe try kneading some shortening into your fondant to see if that helps?
