AI want to try creating pieces using royal icing and use the color flow technique. I've never done this before and have reading about it. I came across something that said you can't place the pieces directly against the bc. Is this true?

AYou can but after a few hours the grease in the buttercream starts to break down the royal icing and then you'd be left with a gooey mess. If you want to put a ri plaque on a bc cake, just wait until the last minute to place it on top.

Thanks. Is there a way to "glue" the pieces to toothpicks or something if I want them to stand up?

Oh, just thought of another question-if I put a layer of MMF inbetween the RI and the BC, would that prevent the RI from breaking down?

Of course! Let it dry completely then use royal icing to glue a toothpick or skewer on the back.

I forgot to mention earlier that if you need to place the ri plaque on the cake long before the cake gets cut for whatever reason, you can put the plaque on some rolled out fondant and then just cut the fondant to the shape of your plaque. The fondant keeps the bc from touching (and messing up) the ri.
