Attaching Candles To A Cake Board - Would Gum Glue Work?

I've seen candles sticking into little fondant balls around cake boards.  I like the look of this rather than sticking the candles right into the cake. How can I keep the fondant balls from falling off the board? I do not have candy melts at the moment and will not be able to get out to the store beforehand. : /   Would gum glue dry hard/work well enough?

Yes, I have used that in the past and it works just fine. You could also use melted chocolate, or royal icing if you have any made up.
