So I'm making a cake to welcome the newest addition to my sisters family, and I'd like to cover it in pale blue fondant. I have the Americolor royal blue and sky blue gel colors, and am intending on adding just a tiny bit to white fondant. However, I can't decide which gel color to use! My understanding is that the sky blue creates a bit more of a teal shade than the royal blue, which might look quite nice - or totally wrong!
Ideally I'd like to create a shade similar to the fondant on this cake:
Can anyone help point me in the right direction? I also have Americolor electric yellow and leaf green which I've read of some people using with the blue.
Links to other cakes for color comparisons would also be helpful ![]()
This may not help much....but I'd definitely try using a small piece of white and do a few tests. Use just the dab of a toothpick to add your color to it. If it comes out wrong, wrap it up tightly and you have a bit of new color to use for another time. Experiment.
I would just use a teeny tiny bit of the sky blue. It's what I use to get a pale blue. Just start with a very tiny bit. You can always add more if needed.
I would use the sky blue in a very tiny amount. And add more if necessary. To get a teal, you would have to add a tiny bit of green.
I agree- definitely sky blue. The picture you're using for inspiration has a bit of a grey tone to it too; you may end up with a brighter blue than you want and you can add just A LITTLE tiny bit of black to tone down the blue.
Great, thank you for all the responses. I'll start out with a tiny bit of the sky blue and as GixxerChick says I may do a couple of tests first.
Thanks for the suggestion about the black kristinhintz, I do like the greyish tone to the fondant in the picture so I might test a little bit of white fondant with just a teensy dab of the black to see how it turns out.
I'll post a photo of the cake once it's finished :)
