icon_biggrin.gif I have a birthday cake (top tier to be kept by the birthday lady) to do next month and the customer wants it sophisticated, but she wants Happy Birthday Diane written on it. I would like some suggestions on where I should write it or if I should write it on the cake board. I had an idea about decorating the cake, but any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

You could write it on a piece of fondant with royal icing and drape it over the tiers like a swag.

Tell us what your design idea for the cake is. That would help us visualize where the writing might make the most sense...at least it would help me..

I agree. Some designs lend themselves to the message being on the cake board and some don't.

The first design I was thinking of came from wilton's tiered cakes book where each tier had sentimental words written on it, but I thought unless I put fewer words then it would be to cluttered for a stacked cake. So I thoght about scroll work or bubbles, but when she said what she wanted written on it I thought maybe just put silk flowers on it and write Happy Birthday Diane on it.

I think if she wants it to be sophisticated I would probably put the message on an image plaque made with fondant or gumpaste. If you don't have an edible image printer I think it would be safe to make the message from regular ink and just let the birthday girl know that the plaque is not edible.

If she wants sophisticated...how about a cream and gold cake? Cream colored fondant with gold embellishments....maybe fondant roses OR just a gold ribbon and bow at the base of each tier. THEN on a fondant covered board you could place a plaque with the birthday message.

I think that scroll work looks elegant, and maybe you can write on the board, not on the cake? Or maybe do a plaque like everyone else has suggested, and you know how they put monogram plaques up on wedding cakes, do a happy birthday plaque instead? My other thought was doing a basket of flowers and sticking a floral card pick in it, and writing on that? Not sure how many people you need to feed. HTH

Bethola's ideas sound great as does the monogram idea. Those colors are quite elegant!!! Good Luck!!!
