Hello evryone. I need to do a silver lace pattern on a slateblue cake. I've never done anything but the primary colors. Can someone please give me some tips!! I want a glittery silver. I bought silver petal dust and I tried mixing it with the buttercream but it just looks dirty grey. I'm willing to hear anything at this moment. It does not have to be buttercream so if you have any idea on what I can do to get the substance a nice glittery silver, please let me know!!

Petal, luster, or disco dusts are meant to be painted on, not mixed in with the buttercream. You could decorate your pattern onto the cake with either buttercream or royal icing, and then after it's set up go back over it with the petal dust - which you should mix with a little bit of either lemon extract or some type of clear alcohol, such as vodka, gin, everclear, etc. The alcohol evaporates quickly and "dries" the dust and doesn't leave an alcohol taste or flavor behind. Hope that helps icon_smile.gif

Yes...it will give you that shimmery silver effect you're after. When I said "decorate your pattern onto the cake"....what I should've said (lol icon_rolleyes.gif ) was pipe your lace patter onto the cake, or are you planning on using some other method to apply the lace pattern? Maybe using an impression mat or something like that?

it,s not actually lace. it's more like a whole bunch of swirls - free style. So what i'm getting is, I should color the buttercream a light grey, pipe the design I want and then when the design dries for some hours, go over the design with the silver dust which i should mix with the rosemary or any clear alcohol??? ANYONE IS FREE TO BUTT IN HERE!!

Hi Taz....how have you been? Speaking of silver....I was watching my taped "Here comes the cake" episode last night....
One of the entrants...I believe she was actually the winner...was piping silver - not grey (gray?) - royal icing dots to finish off her cake. I rewound the tape and paused it.....it was definately a shiny silver. Does anyone know if there is a silver food coloring or additive out there to accomplish this? Thanks!

BTW...Taz & other Brooklynites....Holy Cross Church is having a Greek Festival this weekend...Ridge Boulevard and 85th street in Bay Ridge....FRI SAT SUN....actually tonite at 6:30 I heard that Constantine Maroulis (dreamy guy from American Idol) is going to be signing autographs and sometime tomorrow our Mayor Bloomberg is passing by......
they have rides for the kids....great Greek food and PASTRIES and all sorts of vendors and stuff. You should pass by if it's convenient.

Hey Adven- We've been out of touch for a while!!
Hey thanks for the info about the church. I may sound stupid but I don't know what a Greek Fest is (lol) Is it like a parade? Oh I feel so stupid!! LOL. Yes, I'm from Trinidad so we say Grey - but you are right, it's gray. I would love to get a very shinny silver and not too many people are responding, I think I'll create a new forum. I have to accomplish this cake by Sunday. BTW - you inspire me. Thanks

Hi again....you are so funny.....

here in Bay Ridge there are a lot of Greeks. The church gets a permit to close down the streets for 2 blocks and they have rides for the kids and food and they sell stuff....hopefully it won't rain because most of it is outdoors. If you like Greek pastries....the ladies from the church make them homemade and they are soooooo good.

I'll look out for your new post. I have never seen any silver food coloring so I'd love to know where to get it. Talk to you soon...
