crabs (Inner Harbor)
black-eyed susan (state flower)
blue crab (state crustacean)
Oriole (state bird)
terrapin (U of MD)
Balitmore Checkerspot Butterfly (state butterfly)
Good luck - please post it when it's finished!!
I'm not sure what level your daughter decorates at, or how much work she wants to put it, but here's my idea. Have you see that Ace of Cake's Show? On there, they do this amazing cake that has all the scenery of California on it. I couldn't find an image, but maybe someone has it. Anyway, I was thinking that she could do a three tiered cake (to fall under the height/width guidelines of course) and on the bottom tier do the whole coastal theme, gumpaste crabs, a net, shells, a lighthouse, sail boats, etc. Then moving up to the next tier, tie in land items, a historical bridge, or building. Maybe sports logos, things of that nature. (FBCT and chocolate transfers are easy and look great in this type of logo work) Then the top tier do black-eyed susans as if they were growing from the second tier up the top one. Tie in a few butterflies, and maybe (again depending on time and talent) a gumpaste oriole on top. Or, if not gumpaste/3D, a buttercream or chocolate transfer standing straight up out of the cake.
My scanner's broken, otherwise I could sketch it out for you to give you what I was thinking. Hope that this isn't too confusing. Would love to see what your daughter does. Good luck to her.
I think mendhigurl has a great idea. I know the cake she is talking about. I don't know if you have Fine Living On Demand but it is a cable station that has Food Network's programs on it. They are showing reruns of 3 of his shows and one of them has the cake mendhigurl is talking about. It would be perfect for your daughter. I will keep looking but I have looked a while and can't find an image of the cake. Will keep it up. Good luck.
Thanks, you guys are great! We are learning alot from this site. As I stated she has just gotten in to decorating cakes, about a year now (and she doesn't even like cake) HAHA. so we both are learning so much. all the photos under my site are hers. We will keep you posted
Ace of cakes was on again tonight (2 episodes) and thet painted another cake and added little animals. Please look at your tv guide and they to catch these shows. I am sure your daughter will be inspired!
