I need some help ...I've been trying to figure out how to make a top hat to go on a hello kitty cake
The cake is for a 18 year old so we want to jazz it up and bling it out so the idea is to put a hat instead of the little bow and give her a tie, now I've been searching online and even here on CC but I don't seem to find a tutorial in how to make it happen ...
So all the help I can get would be greatly appreciated!!!
The cake is due sept 22th so pleaaaaaase ...help!!
You could make the hat uot of cake.
You would need to put proper dowels under the hat regardless of what it's made of. Then you don;t worry.

That's the way I would go, too. Just think of the hat as another tier of the cake and treat it accordingly, putting a cake circle under it and doweling it, like BakingIrene suggested. Good luck with it ñ - the idea sounds really cute!
Thank you lady's! I thought of doing it in cake , that would make the carving easier then RK and the head is already RK , the only thing I'm a bit worried about is how the hat will fit on the head , it has to sit kinda side way's and the head is not really round shaped but I guess I'll just go for it ....
It's probably a silly question but what size is this hat needing to be and does it have to taste nice. If you are making anything less than 4" I would think that pastillage (architectural paste) would work fine. If you use royal to join the pieces then you can sand it down to get it really smooth. Whilst I really wouldn't recommend eating pastillage it can be kept as a momento..

There is nothing like a silly question , I think 4" will just be about right ( I don't want it too big ) never worked with pastillage though first I was thinking about gumpaste so it would'nt be to heavy so now I'm kinda lost again ....cake,gumpaste, pastillage hmmmmm, don't think now is the time to learn how to work with pastillage
But thanks for the input ya'll !!!
I've found pastillage to be much like gumpaste to work with indeed the first flowers I learnt to make were with pastillage not gumpaste. However I can't blame you for not wanting to add a new material to work with on top of everything else.

If you go with cake, I would try a center dowel down through the middle of the hat and into the head, especially if the head is already RKT - that ought to hold on to the dowel very nicely. I just had another idea, though. You could make a hat out of posterboard or some other heavy cardboard, so that the structure would be hollow. You could then cover it with gumpaste, and it wouldn't be nearly as heavy as other things we've been talking about.
@Marianna, I asked the ladie at my cake supplie store wat she would do and she said she would go for RK and hollow it out so it's not as heavy, she said if I go for cake it might split in half sins it's kinda hanging of the side, your idea of the posterboard sound's good to!
Anyway I'll come up with something but it's always a good thing there are some people in here to help with the brain storming part ,
Maureen
