LOL sorry it's still early for me here on the east coast. I would use a gentle twisting motion when putting it in and when removing it. Any time you stick something into a cake there will be some damage. I never use wired decorations at all but I know some people will use drinking straws or they will just wrap the wire with some kind of food safe material before putting it directly into the cake.

don't twist it , just push it straight in . I prefer drinking straws , but do use the flower picks for larger arrangements .
