Well I am a night owl so am usually baking long after hubby goes to bed.. I am waiting to take cookies out of the oven now and it is 2.15..LOL.
If I am baking during the daytime I listen to music.. Eva Cassidy, Dan Fogelberg ,Diana Krall, depends on my mood..At night I just bake quietly so as not to wake hubby. I guess I should wear shoes.. I am usually just in my bare feet and my feet and back do get sore sometimes. I don't wear an apron but if I happen to sit down to take a break and Zeke{ the cat} gets up to snuggle I always go change before returning to baking or decorating..Like Squirrelly I am always worried about cat hair. Guess it would just be smarter to wear an apron , it would cut down on laundry..LOL

Well last night I baked 2 cakes, so while they baked I boiled some chicken breasts, made chicken tortilla soup, made some garlic mashed potatoes. When the cakes were done, I made some apple turnovers.
So tonight after I get off work (10 hours) I will decorate the cake, then make a mexican casserole and make and bake some cinnamon rolls.
Oh yeah, between all this I will be washing clothes too!
I too have to decorate at night time. I have a little galley kitchen without much room, no tv, no radio, just me and my big mess! I am new at this and need to concentrate anyway! I have to say that I love the idea from cybourg about her child because my daughter is the reason I do it at night but if she is "helping" I could have fun time with her and get stuff done! Thanks for the idea.
I have 2 toddlers so my prime cake time is 10pm-2am. I'm a stay at home mom, but daytime is for meals, chores, playing and learning. I cook at home everyday to save money so that is usually during naptimes.
I'm usually easily spooked or feel creepy at night, but not while doing cakes! I'm too busy for that... I close the blinds and turn on country music. It's like my own little world.
I clean and do everything else I need to during that time. If I leave anything for daytime I'll get way too behind on other things.
lastingmoments-funny you say that about country music, because I'm the same way, though I don't always listen to it when I'm decorating.
Usually I forget to turn the radio on until I'm half finished. I'll pause to look at the cake and realize that it's really really quiet in the house. Of course that could be because DH went to bed an hour ago, haha. Wish I could have the TV on, but you can't see or hear it from the kitchen. Bummer.
I usually forget the apron, too, even though I have 2 of them. Doesn't really matter, though, because Most of my clothes are stained with various things my toddler has wiped on me. I *have* to wear sneakers, though. I have bad nerves in my big toes and the balls of my feet, so if I forget to wear shoes, it feels like my feet are on fire by the time I'm finished and I can't sleep.
I want to go to Barbara Ann'e for dinner tonight..All that food you made while waiting for your cake sounds delish. I usually just sit at my computer and check out the Cake Central forums while stuff is in the oven.. You make gourmet meals while you are waiting.. I need to get off my butt more I think..LOL ![]()

Barbara-ann- Whew, I'm tired just reading what you do!!!
Yes Crimsonhair, I want to go there for dinner also, sounds yummy!!
I don't dare tell what I do while the cakes are baking...this time around I did nothing! But I deserved the break, believe me!!!!
Everyone jokes and says I should have my own cooking show and call it Broadway Cooking. I put on musical cd's and sing along with them. It relaxes me and every now and than notice someone in my famly watching and laughing which makes me sing louder!!!!! Hehe Last nght was Oliver! so ofcoure i kept getting inturupted by kids asking, "Please can I have more?"
I have big Tshirts that I stole from my husband that I wear, I can't stand shoes so I go barefoot. I'm mean and make my kids play on their own or watch me but don't touch. I turn on some CDs, lately I've been putting Nickelback in because it's my 4 year old's favorite so it keeps him happy.
i don't really have a routine other than it's usually not until after dinner. Dh has to get the girls ready for bed, not that he can get them ready, as for complete silence no way not in my house. DH at least keeps the kids tamed so they don't tear the house down. it's really great when i can get them to sit and watch they love that it's like they are in a trance, when i can get them to sit still.
The cakes I usually have to make need to be ready for the weekend. So in between the 5 kids or more(friends and girlfriends) I bake all the cakes and make icing one day and then get up early on the next (day cakes need to be done) and start decorating. Still with everybody coming in and out. So there is usually alot of noise and the tv going. Along with making dinner, my two year old wanting to read a book or one of a million other things that happen, I wonder how anybody does it.
Whew.. i think we all need to sit down and have some cake.
Guess I do not mutli task well. I bake the night before and begin decorating the next morning. Hair in a pony tail and ever since I had a client drop by with me in a old t-shirt/shorts/no makeup, I try to make sure that I look presentable.....just in case.......don't want to scare any future clients away! ![]()
Usually the TV is on but once I start to concentrate on the decorating I do not hear it.
I clean my mess up as I go as I cannot stand dirty dishes in the sink or messes around me. Gets me all confused ![]()
I have a hummingbird feeder outside my kitchen window and I take breaks with the hummingbirds come to feed. ![]()
