please forgive me if this question has already been asked elsewhere........
I was wondering how soon could I bake my son's birthday cake (without freezing it) his birthday is the 29th of this month?

Depends on the type of cake. If you like mud cakes, you can bake it prefereably a week ahead, and it will taste better when it comes to decorating it.
Sponge cake - same day.
Buttercake - day before.
Then you can always add things like syrups and moist fillings to help with the mouthfeel when a cake is a bit more mature.
