How Do I Carve Steps Or Make Steps Out Of Cake?

I am making a cake that includes a staircase. I'm not sure what is the best way to go about making steps that are symmetric and sturdy. The staircase is to lead up to a stage. Any ideas?

I did it not long ago, and found that marking on the cake with toothpicks until you have everything where you're happy with it is the way to go. I use ganache for gluing everything together, and it's pretty solid.
