My daughter really likes the books in the hunger games series, I have not read them. She is planning to have some girlfriends over on 3/23/12 to go to the movie as it comes out that day. She wants me to make her a cake for it and I am completely at a loss. Since I have not read the books I don't have the knowledge of the nuances of the design. I really do not have the time or inclination to read the books at this point but will if I have to. I have seen the covers and searched the galleries and found mostly cakes with the gold bird symbol. Does anyone have some unique ideas I could incorporate for her. She is so patient and understanding when I am busy making cakes for others and I really want to make this special for her. I appreciate any suggestions. Happy caking.

You might just read a synopsis somewhere to get some ideas, but it might help to focus only on the first book and not the whole series. Then when the 2nd movie comes out you can make another cake! ![]()
Some things that you could do are write the names of the major characters. Katniss, Gale, Peeta, Primrose, Rue. A bow and arrow for Katniss' weapon of choice. You could do the gold mockingjay bird or the words District 12 somewhere.
There's also a huge cornucopia that's full of weapons. OH! you could do a replica of the battle field! The cornucopia is in the very middle and there are 24 others small round platforms. the you could maybe do names or the words Katniss, District 12 Victor. OR! The phrase The Girl On Fire is used throughtout because the main character, Katniss, literally wears an outfit that is on fire. You could do flames.
I could keep going. ![]()
If you need help with designing the field, etc just let me know.
I would agree with the last post with doing the battlefield, that would be cool. It's a circle with the cornucopia in the center. With the 24 platforms all around. Make small weapons and do not forget Katniss' bow & arrow. You definitly have to include the mocking jay symbol.
Actually if you get time to read the books do so. They are amazing, I couldn't put them down. Good luck and please post the picture as I'd love to see it.
I haven't read the Hunger Games either but if you search Google images for "Hunger Games cake" there seems to be a ton of cakes designed around that theme.
look at Pinterest for Hunger Games.
i would do the sliver parachute above the cake. (that was how during the games the tributes got special favors and presents from their Capital sponsors. they were anything from lifesaving medicines to bread from home.)
and can i also suggest reading the books? they are an easy and very engaging read. I couldn't put them down either.
You could do three tiers with different themes from the book. Flames around the sides to represent the "girl on fire." Lumps of coal from Katniss' home district. Racks of weapons, food, and survival gear (sleeping bags, packs). Trees and flowers from the battlefield (including hives of stinging bugs like wasps). Silver parachutes with soup or bread. A handful of dark red berries (significant in the book's finale). Bow and arrows. Hunting snares (from the beginning of the book).
Can't wait to see what you come up with!
Kwajette, did you free hand the mokingjay? you did a great job.
here is another pic of it from another ccer. http://cakecentral.com/gallery/2246483/hunger-games
I've been dying to try one of these cakes but feel so intimidated by all the detail

Those are great ideas, thank you all so much. I knew I could count on the inspiration and creativity of the board. Now I just need to sketch out what I want and get to work ![]()
My daughter's 8th grade English class is taking a field trip to see the Hunger Games movie. I am going to make them cupcakes so I practiced this morning using the mockingjay image and SCAL with the Cricut Cake and it worked wonderfully. I can't wait!
