I am having the hardest time with my gumpaste or fondant/tylose figures not having any cracks. I have tried kneading & massaging & kneading & massaging some more. I have also microwaved the gumpaste or fondant/tylose for a few seconds. Every single time I have some sort of cracks, especially when I am trying to form it in to a ball for a head on a figure. Please help! Thank you in advance.
Are you adding any shortening to the fondant? It's been my experience in the past if I added too much shortening the fondant would change in consistency and would not knead back together very well.
I normally use fondant with a little tylose powder kneaded in. I knead the fondant only until it is soft and pliable. I put just a little Crisco on my hands (very, very little). I place the fondant in the palm of my hand a begin to roll it into a ball. At first I use firm pressure and lighten up with the pressure as I roll the ball. That seems to work for me.

Thank you Price for your response. I would always add more & more shortening thinking that it would help but it sounds like it is just making it worse. I now use ondant with tylose added because gumpaste would dry out & get hard too quickly. In the future I will only add a tiny bit of shortening to my hands & not the actual fondant & hopefully that will make a difference.
I find whenever I work with gumpaste to make figure/toppers I have to work FAST! I have a zillion zip lock bags right beside while I'm working so if I'm not using any gumpaste (even for 2 minutes!) I place it in the zip lock bag and I haven't had the cracking problem since. I use Satin Ice gumpaste and color it myself. HTH
