On one of the many cake sites I've visited I've seen fantastic work done by layers of overpiping. I can't remember who's site it was and I haven't the patience to go thru all the ones I've saved in my favs. Does this sound remotely familiar to anyone? I can hear you out there now saying "oh oh!! I know, I know...." Thanks guys and gals, you always come thru!
are you referring to the lambeth method? i have notice that toba garrett has a lot of that technique in her books.

Just saw this in a book at Hobby Lobby by Martha Stewart. It was a 5 layer wedding cake done by someone in England using this old technique. I tried it and it does take some practice to make a good looking finished product but I love how it raises the design to another dimension.
Here is a link (take a look at the grooms cake and the one below it)

Here is a tut from American Cake Decorating for the Lambeth method.

This is the one I always think of:

It's the very first cake in the thumbnails. Bronwen Weber did this in the Lambeth style and I think it's just beautiful.
I would post the picture, but I don't know if that would be ok or not since it's copyrighted.
There are also a couple of lambeth cakes at the bottom of this page:
