Hi,
I am tapping into your imaginations for something innovative to do for a republican party birthday, the 152 anniversary of the party in our county.
All current politics aside, I'd like to do something unusual and classy, not too technical although I'm ready for a challenge.
Thanks!

Of course the first thing that comes to my mind is the elephant. However, I'm sure you've already thought of that, so think about what the party stands for, what do you percieve as something that represents it? I am assuming you are republican so what are you the most proud of? Is it something you could represent visually? I know, I'm a big help, NOT.

Thanks, Yes, I was thinking about the elephant. I thought about starting with the bear and modifying it with a trunk to make an elephant. What would you do to construct a trunk (I can see it drooping and falling off!!) nightmare! I envision the bear sitting upright on a round single layer draped with red with and blue ribbon banner. I thought about cutting a sheetcake into the shape of the county and marking the towns and villages with a red white and blue fondant ribbon affair drape over a bit of it. I can't envision the color placement of the ribbon quite yet in my head. I have until Feb. 17th. BUT, That is a busy week for me.......aahhhhhh what's one more to crank out! gggg I also thought about a FBCT seal.....what are your thoughts?

You could also set the elephant atop a star-shaped cake covered or draped in red, white and blue. I've seen Wilton turn this cake into a patriotic Fourth of July cake lots of times.

Well, my thought was to go really patriotic since it's a birthday of historical significance. I've never used a printed picture on an icing sheet before, but I think this just screams for it (and I've been told it's very easy).

Why not gather up pictures of republican presidents and place them on the sides of a two or three tiered cake (round or square) that is iced white? Anyway, print the pictures out in ovals or squares and pipe a simple red bead border around each picture on the cake--kind of like little cameos. Then, take a blue ribbon (fondant or real) and write "Celebrating 152 years of American Pride" (or something like that) in white. Place that banner/ribbon on the cake so it is positioned diagonally from top to bottom on the front of the cake and put a color flow or royal icing run-in elephant (red, of course) on the top of the cake. Or, even a fondant elephant if you have the skill to make one.

There's a painting of each president in the White House. I think it would be neat if you could place copies of some of those on the cake. I bet you could find them with a simple search on the web.

You could even put a bow on top of the cake or have some wired stars or boing-y things coming out of the cake like fireworks if you didn't want to make an elephant.

I don't know if you would consider this too much work or not, but it seems pretty simple in my mind. Oh, and you can get the pictures printed on icing sheets at Wal-mart for pretty cheap where I live (around $5 for an 8 1/2" by 11").

Im just thinking about the whole elephant thing. I watch 2 much duff. Can the elephant be doweled in the middle and attach a thick wire that you could wrap the rice crispie treat around and mold and cover that in fondant???

why not make a cake that looks like whatever state your in......assumming its a red state! if it is, maybe color it red and drape a flag over it w/fondant or something like that. although, i like the teired president pic idea that fronk suggested.

Ok....so here's my imagination running while I'm typing. I'm seeing an elephant sitting on top of a sheet cake (or on top of a tierd cake, or alone, depending on how many you have to feed). Make him holding a flag....but in an interesting way.

I'll try to explain - use the cake ball pan to make a round ball and then a smaller ball on top of that - kind of like a snowman. The top ball will be the elephant head, bottom the body. Make cupcakes and use either full size or half size cupcakes for the feet. Use fondant to have beautiful ears coming off the top tier and then form a trunk around a dowel that will stand up directly through the bottom and top feet. This dowel will also be a flag pole. From the flag pole drape a piece of fondant that you can paint with food coloring to look like a flag. Picture Dumbo when he was holding his mom's tail...this is how you can have the trunk holding the flag pole.

Ok....so it's way hard to explain and I have a vision in my head...wish I had a scanner, I'd draw a sketch and send it to you!!

Best of luck....

Here are Wilton's instructions for turning the 3D Teddy into an elephant, using a dowel rod for the trunk.

I can't thank you all enough for your input! I am going to go to Walmart later today and will check out the printing! In the meantime I will check out the elephant.....somewhere on it I really like the elephant idea. I neglected to mention that this is a contest of sorts, and fund raiser. There will be a category for professional entries and I am in the other "at large" category as the professional entries are by invitation. That's fine with me as I do this avidly, but don't want to rent a building and do this full time....I love MY kitchen! I want each one to be fun, not cranking them out everyday, physically I can't do that anyway after numerous back surgeries. I know that whenever I post a question I ALWAYS great answers from the best and most talented! It's a sure thing......thanks again.....I haven't gotten to post pics of my cakes yet as our connection here in the "boonies" is very slow for that sort of thing.....I'm thinking about ......if I can't get pics printed on sheets, how about printing on paper and sealing them in a plastic laminate? Thanks!!!!!!!!

I think as plan B, the laminated pictures would work fine, but definitely make the cake square (or something with sides) because I don't think the laminated pictures would curve around a round cake very well.

If you can make the elephant on top out of the mini bear that would be very neat! I might have to try that myself, but my kids would want it to be Dumbo, not the red republican elephant! Ha ha!
