I am making a cake for my 84 year old, amazing checkers player father for his birthday. I was planning to use fondant squares to make the board, but would also consider other ideas. What I am most looking for are suggestions on what to put on the board that would give it height and dimension. I had thought of putting a few "kinged" checkers in a final winning position, or using a couple of very large checkers positioned above the cake, but I do not know from what, or how to make them. I would consider myself a novice but I use fondant, gumpaste and isomalt with good success.
Sounds like a fun cake! If you want it to look realistic, there's not much you can do for height -since checkerboards are pretty plain....BUT....for greater impact, you can make the inside of the cake a checkerboard cake to match- that way everyone will be surprised when the cake is cut, too!!
