Smooth Cream Cheese Icing Recipe For Covering Cake

I'm going to airbrush a cake orange for Halloween and the client wants red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. I have yet to find a cream cheese recipe that provides a smooth outer surface for covering the cake. Do I mix it with buttercream? Should I use buttercream with a cream cheese flavoring? Should I use a regular buttercream recipe and freeze the cake then go over it with a hot spatula? Help! Thanks in advance everyone!
