I'm doing a stacked cake with blown sugar bubbles for a dear friend's daughter's 2nd birthday. It's a bubble themed party and I actually learned how to make blown sugar bubbles for the occasion!

Anyway...I'm having a hard time deciding on icing and it's completely up to me. It's 2 tiered stacked rounds. The top will probably be covered with bc piped grass with a fondant figure girl blowing through a bubble thing with the bubbles cascading down the side of the cake. My gut says that fondant would look better, but it's going to be eaten by toddlers and their parents and I think that fondant tastes odd.

Can a few of you weigh in and tell me what you think?

Thanks - I'm nervous enough that I've gotten in over my head, but I'm game for anything! =)

I would use the crusting buttercream icing with Dream whip in it. Smooths out just like fondant and tastes great. Hope this helps.

I would go with the above unlees heat is a factor. Sometimes the dry heat in a building with wilt b/c or any heat for that matter. Depending on outside heat factor and transporation heat temp too.

I agree I would go with a bc it tastes better and the kids will enjoy it more just make a crusting on and use the viva towel method it works wonders I know there is also another method out there by a CC member that uses a paint roller (cant wait to try it) then you could get the look of fondant but the tast of BC. One last option what about rolled buttercream?

I would go with a crusting buttercream as well, it goes over best with kids. The crusting buttercream with dream whip is posted on this in the recipe section under Butter Cream Icing. I have used this several times and it tastes great and smooths awesome!

This option intrigues me. I read some past threads about it here on CC. It sounded like it's not the easiest thing to work with as far as covering cakes. Am I wrong in this assumption? Also, does it taste just like BC? If anyone has any experience with it I would be interested to hear your take!

Although I do not have a lot of experience with RBC, the one time I made it, I was not impressed. It is much softer than Fondant and is very greasy. I do not think it tastes anything like buttercream, I threw mine out.

It tastes really good but is easier to tear than fondant. But otherwise most people like it. It is greasy compared to regular fondant but addition of p.s on it after covering your cake gives you a matte finish. I did my busy bee cake in my photos with it. And my elmo's nose in it also. I like it and many people who don't like fondant actually like this.

Here is the recipe:

2lbs of conf sugar
2 cups crisco
1/2 c boiling water
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla
1 tbs corn syrup
2 tbs flour
whip till fluffy ( about 8 mins or so )

i always put in all the ingredients first and then the sugar last a little at a time. It's not as sweet as BC but it's really great. Smooths really well. Hope this helps.

OMG I just realized there is no Dream Whip in the recipe I sent. You also add i envelope of Dream Whip to it. Turns out great everytime.

I actually got the instructions from the Sugar Blowing/ Pulling Forum here on CC. There are a couple of really knowledgeable people that were willing to walk me through it.

I did a dry run right after Christmas and it worked! I was so excited to be able to do it! It's fun, a little scary, but results in a really pretty end product!

I buy mine at the grocery store. It's in the aisle with the baking supplies. It's a box with 5 envelopes in it and it ( by itself) will make a whipped topping like cool whip. It's approx $3.00 here in canada for the box. Hope this helps.

Here's the final product! If you can't see this image, you can see it in my photos as well. the blown sugar bubbles were not as much of a success as planned. I was going to have more but there was a lot of breakage due to high humidity this weekend. I was really pleased with the end result, as was the family it was for!
